ABOUT

Spencer Hetherington is an award-winning filmmaker from Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.
Spencer’s passion for storytelling started at a young age, and by high school, his early work was already earning recognition – including three consecutive Grand Prize wins at the ViewFinders Youth Film Competition (run by the Atlantic International Film Festival), two features on CBC TV’s Reel East Coast, and a spot as a National Finalist in the TIFF Next Wave Young Filmmakers Showcase.

He continued to hone his craft in film school, where his films The Valravn and The Day the Embers Burned Cold both won the Top Prize at the Canadian Media Educator National Student Awards (an annual competition between more than 20 film and media schools across the country). His independent projects have since reached international audiences, with over 100 film festival screenings to date. Most notably, his short Old Flame – A Super 8 Story screened at the Academy Awards® qualifying HollyShorts Film Festival, earned awards for best picture editing and sound design at the Silver Wave Film Festival, and was featured in Short Focus magazine – the world’s premier short film journal. Spencer’s latest documentary, Running In Circles, received the Audience Choice Award at the 2024 Outdoor Outdoor Film Festival and Best Director at the Sugar Loaf Film Festival.

A versatile filmmaker with strong technical skills and a deep narrative understanding, Spencer blends immersive visuals, thoughtful sound design, and intimate storytelling to craft compelling cinematic experiences.
