Spencer Hetherington is an award-winning filmmaker from Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.
He began making movies with his friends around the age of 10 and quickly developed a passion for telling stories through film. In high school, Spencer’s early work earned him the Grand Prize three years in a row at the ViewFinders Youth Film Competition hosted by the Atlantic International Film Festival. He was also selected as a National Finalist at the TIFF Next Wave Young Filmmakers Showcase and two of his films were featured on the CBC television series Reel East Coast.
Spencer continued honing his craft in film school where he created a number of short films. Two of these films, The Valravn and The Day the Embers Burned Cold, both won the top prize at the Canadian Media Educator National Student Awards; an annual competition between more than twenty film and media schools across Canada.
Spencer has also made several independent projects that have screened at over 100 film festivals – most notably Old Flame – A Super 8 Story. The film screened at the Academy Awards® Qualifying HollyShorts Film Festival and the Atlantic International Film Festival, among others. It took home two awards at the Silver Wave Film Festival for excellence in sound design and picture editing. The film was also featured in the UK based Short Focus magazine.
His most recent documentary titled Running In Circles received the Audience Choice Award at the 2024 Outdoor Outdoor Film Festival and Best Director at the Sugar Loaf Film Festival.
